... left of my small bowel, and I am wondering how long before I am able to get off tpn an tube feedings, no one has really answered for me one doctor says 6 months and another says a couple years and Im really wondering how soon someone has gotten free of tpn and tube feedings??
I was on TPN for exactly six months. My body began to reject it and was severely affecting my liver. TPN can be used for months-years, it all depends on how the patient tolerates as well as whether or not you are able to eat and absorb natural food. I hope this helps, feel free to write back with any questions.
Hello. I too have small bowell. Four feet total. I don't remember how long i was on TPN, but it was for more than a year. It started to effect my liver and my doctor took me off. I have never had a solid stool since my first operation. I daily take meds to help 'slow' down the absorbtion of food but really its just a bandaide and doesn't help. Have learned to live the best i can with what i have.Have tried over the counter drugs without ANY success. Now I take Tincture of Opium and in the past, Paragoric. Neither really does the job of firming up stool. Gosh, I am sorry. I havn't helped you much, but i do understand. Talking to your doc will help them ddecide how to proceed. Hope all works out for you.
