I want to make sure I don't get pregnant and I don't know whether or not I am still protected during my "period pills".
No , you shouldn't need a back up during the last 7 days of your pills, (the inactive pills), as long as you didn't miss any pills, and you took them as directed you are protected from pregnancy!
I am not a doctor or pharmacist, but was on the pill for over 25 years so I do know how they work and how to use them properly, but if it would make you feel better, you can contact your pharmacist or your OB/Gyn and ask them to make sure!
I hope my answer helps!
