That was 4 years ago. Three weeks ago I went to bed as usual and the next morning I woke up and my right arm was paralyzed. No movement at all. I was and am... 3 weeks later... In severe pain and have numbness off and on. I went to the ER and they checked for strokes and found nothing. Doctor referred to neurologist and they called and said my "condition wasn't sever enough for me to be seen by them". My PCP increased my gabapentin to 1000 4x a day. Is this dose safe? I have been to the er, my PCP and urgent care because today I wanted an answer of what exactly is the problem. They did xrays... Nothing. Is this nerve pain? Do I just have to live with it? Today the pain was so bad I nearly passed out. Does anyone have any advice or been in a similar situation? I can not put up with this... Help?
Hi ajustice4u. I have read that 3600 mg divided into three times daily is the maximum amount. I find it odd that your doctor upped your dosage when you were already having problems with the amount that you were taking. Especially when that sounds like such an extremely large amount. Even more confusing is that the neurologist said that your condition wasn’t severe enough to be seen by them. I wonder what does have to happen for them to see you? What happened to you must have been frightening and you shouldn’t have to go through it alone.
In my experience with taking Lyrica and Cymbalta I had pain and numbness that I know for certain that was from the drugs and not from nerve pain from Trigeminal Neuralgia. I have completely tapered off Lyrica slowly and I’m slowly tapering off Cymbalta now. I am down from 60 mg to 15 mg. I’m in less pain now than I was when I was taking the medications and the numbness is completely gone. They have many horrible side effects. Have you done any research on Gabapentin and medications like it? If not; please do it and I guarantee that you will be surprised. There is a Gabapentin group on Facebook that you can join and you will find all the information that you need. Between these two groups you can find all the answers to your questions. Take care and I wish you the best. Cindy
3600mg of gabapentin is usually the max dose but my pain management doc told me that in some cases he will prescribe 4400mg a day. Sounds like we r in the same boat. The continuous pain of pins and needles can be unbearable. I'd suggest looking into getting into a pain management program. Most of those docs know what they're doing. And it may take more than a few visits but they will eventually have u on the right meds that u can actually live a normal life. Problem is that sometimes it'll take months b4 u get your 1st appointment with a PM doctor. So in the meantime I suggest asking ur PCP to take u off the gabapentin cuz in my opinion is a crap drug. Ask him to put u on lyrica. It works much better and its peak effects are faster too. I was on 3600mg of gabapentin and it didn't touch my pain. Since I switched to lyrica I've been able to live a better life. Sounds like u have severe diabetic neuropathy (nerve pain) and u don't have to just put up with it
Wow 4000mg of gabapentin a day ?! That’s the most I ever heard of.
