Dear GeeGee, welcome to the site. It is important to be honest with your drs, but I think you may have to sort of divide and conquer here in this case. Do you feel like you are healing any emotionally with the treatment this dr is giving, do you feel you are making any progress with the talk therapy part of the treatment. If not, you may need to switch drs. Most drs are hesitatnt to offer meds only to those who had substance dependence, but you should also be willing to do the things to help during talk therapy. It is rough to be so nervous you don't leave the house, and if you really want to conquer that, at least be willing to do things suggested to you, and not just depend on meds to get you to the point you can start venturing out. You may also need to get a thyroid and hormone blood panel done, as thyroid of hormone imbalances can make panic/anxiety symptoms much worse.
Try talking to your regular dr and see if they will do those tests and get you a referral to a different pyshciatrist, or psychologist to help and see if yur regular dr is willing to try you on a benzo, at least on a trial basis, until some of the talk therapy can help. It almost sounds like you are feeling more anxiety, not less, with the top current treatment. Is this something new, or has it been getting much worse lately. A psychologist can not prescribe benzos, but often are better with the talk therapy part. If your regular dr will try you on a benzo on a trial basis, try a psychologist or therapist for the talk therapy part. It usually helps and the 2 together( therapy and meds) may help get you feeling confident enough that you and avoid some panic and get back into living, and not hiding at home. I have been there, this is not a judgment. My last 2 counselors were better at talk therapy for anxiety than previous therapists, but all have helped me in many ways. Hope you get some relief soon. Patti
I agree with pattishan, it's about getting help as well and a good psychiatrist and counselor that help you, I can tell you from past experience alot of doctors don't like writing benzo's and especailly if you had the drinking in the past they may think that you may have a problem with this med as well for they can be adddictive... alot of antidepressant's are suppose to help with anxiety..good luck
Hi geegee, I must congratulate you on all your sober time! You can start off
on a low dose of a benzo after being labeled..Im sure the Dr. prescribing
would keep close tabs on you..That's just my opinion. I am not your Dr.
who i hope is a shrrink. I'm just a friend... who kinda feels ya D-Squared
Hi geegee. Are you asking for the benzos??? GP's and psychs often look at that and see drug seeking behavior. Find a psych sweetie,I can tell you from experience that you can take enough benzo's to put down a horse and still not want to leave your house.A combination of talk therapy AND medication is usually what it takes to get through the anxiety, especially when the anxiety has reached such a high level that it alters your life, and in essence, changes your mindset. GP's fail to recognize when an individual needs therapy too. Many of them tend to think they know exactly what they are doing on the mental and emotional issues, but this IS NOT their field. And high kudoo's for 4 1/2 years of sobriety!!! Wishing you well,tejas129
