Pain, tingling and numbness are called neuropathy. They come from nerves being pinched or impeded on in some way. You made an appointment with your neurologist, the right Dr. to help you. I just did the same thing and am 1 step ahead of you. I had MRIs done today of all the appropriate areas of my spine. Surgery is a possibility for me, as I have put it off for about 6 years with alternative methods of treatment. You may not need surgery for your problems, you'll have to see what your neurologist determines.
I started 6 yrs. ago with extreme pain and loss of feeling in my right arm. Through ESIs (Epidural Steroidal Injections) and pain medicines for a limited time, I was able to go years with little problem except the need to do stretches for my neck. I also had physical therapy. I had similar problems with my lumbar/sacral spinal discs and you may, also. My point is that neurosurgeons may be eager to operate but it may not be necessary. Do a lot of research to help you decide. Artificial discs are finally available here in America. That's progress for me. What you need may be different. Further testing has to be done.
