It's the memory loss that I am most concerned about since I have had a transient amnesia problem already a couple of years ago.
They are very short acting drugs. You will be awake and able to respond to commands during the procedure but it is likely that you may have no memory or the memories of the procedure will be fuzzy. Once you are in recovery, the drug will wear off and you will remember that part. Some people do get drowsy but they rouse easily and can follow commands. Unfortunately for me, I have had Versed and Fentanyl several times for back procedures like epidurals and radio frequency ablations and I never get amnesia. I remember everything and can even tell the Dr the conversations that go on around me during the procedure so you may or may not have amnesia. You can ask them to lightly sedate you. Dont be afraid though, it is truly not that bad! You will just think you were asleep.
Let me ease your mind very easily. The Colonoscopy... Best sleep you will get.You won't remember much,if anything. And you are gonna want that sleep. The Prep before the Colonoscopy?Absolutely the worst!I will shoot straight with you.It plain just SUCKS!And after the Colonoscopy, the GAS SUCKS!So,best part of a Colonoscopy.in my opinion... IS THE PROCEDURE!You will be fine. And I promise, you will say exactly what I just did, when you are done!Hope this eases your Anxiety!!!
I've had over 50 procedures in the past 13 years, with Versed, Fentanyl, and sometimes Propofol. I haven't experienced any memory loss except for the 20-30 minutes during the procedure. They are very short acting and they don't give you much of it. I really don't think you will have any problems. - ElizaJane
