I have a long life ahead of me, full of fibromyalgia. I'm only 18. Anyone with tips and secrets that have it- it's appreciated. My medicine, savella, makes me sick so I can't take it. Tried just about everything else for it though (lyrica, etc) but also open to home / natural remedies too!
Hello Mymymary and a warm welcome to DC. Fibromyalgia (FM) is treated with the following two categories of drugs: Antidepressants and Anticonvulsants Medications. There are three types of antidepressant medications. Serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI’s) are the newest types of antidepressant medications. Cymbalta (Duloxetine) is a common one. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) are the second type and are a little older. They were originally developed for use in depression. They are now sometimes also used for FM. Lexapro (escitalopram) is one such drug. Tricyclic antidepressants are the third type. They are the oldest type of antidepressants. They too were originally developed for use in depression. However, they also have a long history of use for FM, chronic pain in general, and sleep disturbances. A very common one is Amitriptyline and is often used alongside an Anticonvulsants. Trazadone is another Tricyclic antidepressants.
Savella is an Antidepressants which does not fall into the categories aforementioned but is used to treat FM. Thus if it is not working for you ask to try another drug. Anticonvulsant medications are also commonly prescribed for FM. Common drugs that are prescribed from this category are Topamax (Topiramate) and Lamictal (lamotrigine). If you have muscle stiffness or spasms (when the muscles contract painfully) as a result of FM a muscle relaxant to ease your symptoms will help you. It is common to be on a muscle relaxant also when you have FM. Drug therapy is only half the treatment; as Headstarter (HS) said aquatherapy and a stricter diet helps. Techniques such as massage is used to improve physical problems, such as muscle stiffness or weakness. Discuss these options and others with your rheumatologist as drug therapy alone is ineffective. Also get yourself a book on FM and Chronic Myofascial Pain (CMP) as you may develop CMP or have it already (I hope not). Some Dr’s combine the symptoms of CMP with those of FM and call it FM. This is wrong but sadly all too common and it means that you don’t receive the correct treatment. Like HS said do your research into your condition. The internet can be a confusing and contradictory that’s why starting with a book on the subject first will assist your research – good luck, take care and a happy 2014
I have just started savella today so I don't know yet how it will affect me. I do know that I am very sensitive to meds so I will take a slower approach than the titration package suggest and definitely on a full tummy. Have you tried lowering your dosage? I could not not tolerate cymbalta, but wonder if a lower dose than is available would have worked because it really helped the pain, but I could hardly function otherwise. Some things that help me other than pain med are Epsom salt baths. I use 1-2 cups of the salts in a tub full of hot water with drops of lavender oil and soak for as long as possible. Also magnesium oil or spray rubbed on legs helps the pain especially if it is keeping you up at night. I also struggle with anxiety and depression. I've recently started pristiq for the depression after being on lexapro for several years, and have had no side effects with it. I also take Vit d, b12, omega 3 and various herbs that seem to help. I can give you some herbal websites to check out if you are interested.
