Here recently since getting stable on Lithium, I have a very strong craving for potatoe chips. I usually dont eat them but once or twice a year and now I want them all the time. It is like I cant eat enough. I have checked several sites and no one mentions this as a side effect. Is it just not one that is common? Or just me? I know we are not supposed to change our salt intake but I cant stay away from the chips.
I was just searching this topic and came upon your question. I too, am on lithium and have been craving salt. Mine in the form of saltine crackers. I've been eating them like crazy. I go see my psych doc in a few weeks and will ask about it. I know we are supposed to be careful because too much access salt is bad when we take lithium. However, I've been told that when you crave something it means your body needs it. Not like when you're pregnant but nuyritionally speaking. When I find out I will let you know. Please do the same if you find out. We walk a fine line between therapeutic and toxic so anything like this scares me. I can't help it though I just want the salt so bad. Good luck. :)
Ok, I went to the Dr. today and asked about the salt cravings. It is the lithium. He said to make sure you are drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day. Too much water can case toxicity so don't over do it. The only problem is how you sate the craving as he said if its through potato chips you will twin weight. I just lick the salt off of saltines. :) hope this helped.
