Diagnosed July 2012, given LP which relieved much pressure and excessive fluid. On prescription acetazolamide to help with headaches and back pain. She's suffered all week with sinus pressure. Her family physician gave her antibiotics in case a virus was coming on. She tested negative for both the strep and flu. I just want my daughter to have relief from her sinus pressure. Is it safe or are their any other meds I can give her to help with symptoms?
A Dr shouldnt order antibiotics for the flu or a virus. Antibiotics are NOT AT ALL effective against a virus (strep is bacterial but flu is not and she was negative for both). Perhaps he was thinking she has a sinus infection but it is still not good to give antibiotics unless there is a confirmed bacterial infection because this can lead to antibiotic resistance. She may be able to take Sudafed but I would ask the Dr if it is okay to give it with her history of intercranial hypertension. You can also try a heat pack to her sinus area. I use the kind that can go in the microwave. Dont heat it too hot-just so it is warm and she can lay down with the heat pack across her face. This can help the sinuses to drain and give relief from the pain/pressure. Another thing to try that wont hurt her is to use saline nasal spray (like Ocean Spray) It is just saline (salt) spray and it will help to flush the sinuses out and may help to relieve that pressure. If she can take acetaminophen or ibuprofen, they may help with the pain as well. Hope she feels better soon!
