I've been dealing with anxiety for so long now I'm on the verge of "crazy" I'm tired of being tired today I sought a physician who prescribed me lexapro I'm not how this works and how long it takes. Any suggestions in the community. ?
Lexapro is supposed to be a good long term medication for anxiety issues, but usually you need something instant to take "as needed" when you have a panic attack, or something happens that throws you into a panic or emotional anxiety outburst (this happens to me). I take Buspar for major depressive disorder for my main anxiety medication, and in between I have Klonopin 1 mg 2x's a day as needed only, and I have xanax 1mg, 1x a day as needed, both for breakthrough anxiety. Of all the things I've tried over the years this combination has worked the best. Buspar has completely changed my life, and it happened almost immediately for me. Not everyone has the same outcome with this medication, but I haven't had any of the negative side effects that can happen, as with all medications. I've never tried Lexapro, but it is a medication for anxiety AND Depression, and Buspar is only for anxiety. That seems to be what has made the difference for me.
Any med that also treats depression messes with my head. Buspar also has given me back my energy, and I'm out living my life again instead of staying inside all day and away from large crowds of people. I think having something for the breakthrough anxiety that works instantly is sooooo helpful, because I know that if anything goes wrong, or a panic attack comes on I have help instantly. Which actually makes the panic attacks happen less just knowing that I have that back up. Most doctors will not prescribe both Xanax and Klonopin together because they are both Benzo medications, and mine is only doing that temporarily for some issues going on. Generally it's just the Klonopin I have and that's the best one anyway. It's not as instant as Xanax but it lasts a lot longer. It takes about 30 minutes to help, but is calming and relaxing for 8-10 hours. I hope this helps, even if you continue Lexapro and it works well for you, I would ask for one of these benzo medications to add to your regimen to help the anxiety you're having. Best of luck to you.
Hi, Bronxgirl! I agree with made that Buspar is a wonder drug. I took Lexapro for years with no side effects and excellent results although as she says it takes about 4 weeks to *kick in* and 6-8 weeks to feel the full effects.
Be careful if you're prescribed a benzodiazepine (Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, etc.) which are highly addictive to substance dependent personality types. You have to take them exactly as prescribed and never double up or pop an extra if you're feeling panicky.
Good luck and best wishes. If you have any specific questions or concerns always feel free to post here. We're happy to lend support and share experiences.
I agree with Made and WCV about the Lexapro. It worked for me for anxiety. It can take a while to start working. Like WCV said, one has to be careful with the benzos. They work well, but can have dependency and withdrawal issues. I also took Buspar and it worked well until it just stop working, but got me through the worst of my anxiety. It took a few weeks to build up in my system. All of this is something you should talk to your doctor about.
Wishing you the Best. :)
