... and she says not to take the methotrexate he prescribed
You should have your GP contact your Rheumatologist, express her concerns, advise you of exactly what the objections are and you should demand that this be done immediately!
I also have PSA and without the MTX I would be a basket case. MTX is a very powerful drug that is very effective against PSA. If your GP is delaying the start of your PSA treatment, you must find out exactly what information she feels is missing.
MTX is a proven treatment for PSA so I would want my GP to clarify any problem now with the Rheumatologist so treatment can begin. If they are disputing each other, you are the only one who is going to suffer. A blood test result should be available for both doctors to evaluate.
Since a Rheumatologist is a specialist, I would lean more towards his advice rather than the GP but, you must be the one to find out what exactly is their objection.
Based on your own research with both doctors, you might need to find either a new GP or a new Rheumatologist or both. Please don't waste any time with this. It's your health and you just might have to be the catalyst to get things started.
Hope all works out for you. Good luck.
Would have to agree - follow the advice of your specialist... not your GP.
You didn't say what your GP was, i.e.: nurse practitioner, PA, internal medicine? But whatever my question is why is your GP treating you at all? My rhuemy prescribes all things related to my PSA/ AS, he runs all follow up tests, and even manages my pain meds. My GP only sees me if I have a minor issue that needs tended to or get an infection but even then my rhuemy needs to know about the infection.
Could it be that your under utilizing your specialist? Once diagnosed he takes over that part of your care and treatment. Good luck and please make an appointment with your rhuemy your to get those meds started. Who cares what a GP thinks in this matter, they weren't trained to understand this disease and its intricacies
