I was diagnosed with R A two weeks ago my blood tests show I have a severe case, I am taking Plaqeunil 400 mg daily, my joint pain showed that it is going to be slow in progressing. I was diagnosed with iron defiency anemia last year, and have been having joint pain in my wrists, knees, and ankles for about a year, but now I have swelling and pain in one knuckle on my right hand, and my ankle has been getting real stiff at rest and hurts but not swollen, I am very confused can some one help me clear some of this? Anyone having or had the same symptoms?
It may take a while for the Plaquenil to "kick in".
It can also take some time for your specialist to find the right medicine/s that work well for you.
There are alot of different combinations of RA medicines to choose from and everyone responds differently - trial and error is the only option.
In the mean time has your doctor given you other meds for the pain? NSAID's (ibuprofen, diclofenac) are typically prescribed and these should help.
Here is a good link for you. All the best.
Did your doctor put you on anything besides the plaquinel? It can take 6 months for it to start working. Usually they will also place you on a low dose of prednisone and maybe an NSAID too at the same time.
When I was first diagnosed I was placed on prednisone 10 mg a day, later reduced to 5 mg, 200 mg of Celebrex twice a day (Nsaid) and 400 mg of Plaquinil.
You need something in addition to the plaquinil to treat the symptoms until the plaquinil starts working. Even if it does help, you may have to stay on the NSAID. They should then titrate down the prednisone to see of the plaquinil is really working at about 3 or 4 months into the treatment. Are you being treated by a GP or Rheumatologist?
