I'm at the beginning of this RA journey, and wonder if I should advocate for hitting it hard with the higher level drugs (the Biologics) or start out light with the Placquenil & add as needed. If you could do it over again, what would you do??
No, I would avoid biologics as long as possible. And it's true, most insurance companies will make you try everything else before they'll pay for it anyway.
Just be sure to get your eye exams every six months while on Plaquenil. I was on it for several years and I'm one of those rare cases that developed some central vision loss. We caught it very early at one of my regular 6-month exams. Luckily for me, it's minor and it didn't progress after I discontinued the drug. If I had to do it over again, I would take Plaquenil again. I found the drug to be very effective and most people have no problems from it.
