I was recently diagnosed with RA which was triggered after I gave birth. Prior to that I was 100% healthy with no aches, pains or anything. I was nursing at the time of diagnosis and dealt with the pain for 8 months but I've sinced stopped nursing and today I took my first dose of meds. I am on Methotrexate, prednisone and folic acid. My doctor went over the side effects of the medicine with me but I am so so so very nervous about taking these medications. I know the prednisone is temporary but the other meds I will have to take all the time. I'm looking to hear from people on the meds who may or may not have experienced side effects. I'm just a scared parent who never had to take meds on a regular basis before... other than birth control and prenatals.
Hi. I'm the wrong gender and many times your age, but since RA is an equal opportunity disease, I thought I would give you my opinion. I have been on MTX for almost 2 years now, together with folic acid. I also give myself Humira shots once a week. I have not had any serious side effects other than I had to reduce the MTX from 20 mg to 15. This was caught by the constant blood tests which are, unfortunately, necessary. As you continue to see your Dr, he/she should be able to catch any potential side effect and adjust your medication accordingly. Personally, I would be more nervous about the prednisone. You should ask your Dr about biologics. Humira, Enbril are some. There's a bunch of them on the market and while all medications have a potential for serious side effects, the biologics seem to be less worse, at least for me anyway. It's worth a conversation with your doctor.
I'm not a big fan of steroids, especially prednisone.
You should also discuss with your doctor the possibility of an exercise regimen for your pain. Pretty much everyone is in agreement that exercise, even just walking, will help with the pain.
Good luck with everything and kiss the baby for me. :)
I have been on all of these with no problems. The folic acid is taken with the Methotrexate to prevent problems as mouth sores. I was on MTX for several years and had no problems that I could tell of. The pred is usually temporary, but it sure always works if I ever have a flare. I believe you do not have to be nervous about these meds. Stay calm and be pleased that they are available for you.
Hello, I was pregnant with my first child when I had a terrible flare-up in my right arm. I had Physio on it but didn't get worked out until many years later that it was RA. I have gone on and had two more babies. I have been on Plaquenil, and it was regarded the safest for me at the time during pregnancy. I have had two perfect babies and my last didn't grow real well but has no developmental problems just small for gestational age. I am currently trying to get preg and was told it was safer to get off plaqenil and take Prednisone 5mg every morning and night. (Classified as a small dose). I wasn't happy after starting this and I have stopped! I just put on 6kg in a week and my face was so round and moon like and I just was so depressed with not fitting into clothes, etc so I stopped.
I'm not taking anything at the moment, except pain killers when I have a flare-up or ibuprofen at start of cycle but not mid in case I fall preg as it wouldn't be good for baby to attach and stay in utero. Talk to your Dr's if you have concerns and if they don't make you feel better, I suggest you get a new one! I have had many Dr's in the past and some just guess and others investigate so find a good one and stick with them if you can. I don't know if I have helped you but you are welcome to ask any questions if you still arn't sure.
