I'm 58 yrs. old and have had indications of arthritis for yrs. In the last 6 months my pain levels have soared through the roof. Methotrexate didn't seem to help.
I was on methotrexate and I thought my doc was going to switch me to humera or another in that class, after about 3 to 4 months, but instead I was switched to Avara (sp?). I was also on steriods with methotrexate and I continued those (but was going off of them slowly) when I went on Avara. I was trying to work (more than) full time and being knocked out for a few days per week on methotrexate, wasn't ideal. I also had family and friends telling me that it was terrible for me to be sick like I was, they didn't understand how I felt pre-meds. Well, going on Avara wasn't a good move either, in fact it was a lot worse. I was sick in all ways possible- mentally, physically, emotionally. It was terrible. So I was told to continue to go off of the steriods, but back on Methotrexate. I'm now waiting to see if I should go on Humera. My one doctor/friend also has psoriatic arthritis, and he went from Methotrexate to Humera. He said it had made all the difference.
He said he gets relief without the negative effects of Methotrexate. However, he has said it isn't as great in terms of pain relief. If you are strictly talking in terms of pain relief, I've been on a butrans patch for several months now, and that has helped my pain significantly.
I have been using Humira with methotrexate for about 7 years. The only negative I have experienced is injection site pain. It does sting! One year ago I was told that I was officially in remission. Happy Day! More good news, after only a few doses, my psoriasis cleared up completely and my pain was also gone. I can honestly say that I am pain free, unless I over do it! The only draw back I have is the cost of the Humira.
When giving yourself the injection let the meds sit next to your body to get close to your body temperature but only do this for a few hours any more and it's not suggested... doing this makes the shot painless i have done this with all of my injectables and it works every time.
Humira made my eyes tear but started working on my pain within a few weeks of my first dose. I ended up having to move to a different drug because of my eyes but humira has so far been my favorite and wish I was still using it. In conjunction with methotrexate it's amazing
