I have starting to walk on a regular basis for anxiety and better health in general. My legs and knees are suffering. I am not looking for medication but would like any suggestions for building up strength and lessening the soreness and discomfort. Kity
Hon, its a site for anything concerning medical problems. How far are you walking? You may need to lessen the distance and then work up to it gradually. Things like bengay or a sport cream can help legs being sore. Walmart has one called sports rub that works for me. If you try anything with capsaicin, use it on a small spot first. It burns some people.
If you have any sort of joint pain like that in knees and legs walking can be hard on it. Low impact stuff like riding a bike or swimming is better. If you really want to stick to walking you have to make sure you have good proper fitting shoes. There are stores where they actually watch you walk or run and determine what type of shoes you need. I found out I needed more arch support and was wearing a half size too big. It made a world of difference for me. No more shin splints! Best of luck and keep excersising. It's the only thing that keeps me sane.
If you can take ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) or naproxen (Aleve) it can help with pain and inflammation. Epsom salts in your bath can help with all over muscle soreness. Some people swear by Glucosamine/chondroitin for osteo knee pain. Start your walking program slow and work up to it. If you are getting really sore, you may be pushing too much too soon. And yes, be sure to stretch and warm up before you start.
