My mom is blessed with pretty good health and makes me look like a lazy dweeb, but she's recently started having trouble with acid reflux at night. She's tried everything she can think of but still it's causing her problems. Any suggestions? She isn't on medication of any kind at this time.
funny that this should come up right now I have a neighbor exactly your moms age, she went to her medical doctor with the problem, he asked her when she had the test colonoscopy, she said never, then she told him about the symptoms you describe, he prescribed what you can get over the counter Prilosec, he did an Upper G.I. series and yesterday morninng she went and had the colonoscopy, it showed diverticulosis, they put her on Miralax daily, the priolosec daily (at bedtime) she seems to be doing fine. he removed a couple of polyps (I imagine everyone has some of those they removed them with laser and sent them for a biopsy, I think he called the heartburn GERD gastroesophagealreflux disease, a long name for a treatable problem. I am sure there are numerous ways of dealing with this, he gave her a diet sheet of foods to avoid but she is not one of those people that will do this if the pill works.
I think however your mom needs to see the medical doctor and then he will either most likely suggest what to do or if he feels it necessary he will refeer her to a Gastroenerologist for tests and treatment. I hope this has been of help to you.
As long as your mom isn't on anything else, I recommend Prilosec OTC or you can get a prescription for the generic which is omeprazole which is much cheaper. I have taken for months with great results. It is recommended that you only take for a couple weeks and then stop but my doctor says it is ok to take long term. The only thing that needs to be watched is magnesium intake. It seems that the omeprazole can cause a magnesium deficiency so I just eat lots of nuts and greens.
There are many OTC meds for acid indegestion that she could try. My doctor seems to prefer omeprazole. It is important to not let the esophagus stay raw from the acid reflux so give some of these meds a try.
Hope she gets relief soon,
I'll probably get some thumbs done on this one, but years ago I had this very problem with a hiatal hernia. They wanted to do surgery, I wanted to do conservative measures first. Placing 8 inch blocks under the top of the bed (on the floor) will help to keep her partially upright & helps keep the acid down. I don't recomment the pro-ton inhibitors because they can exerbate femur fractures if used for a long time. At 75, bless her heart, she could have some oteosporosis already, & these type of drugs are not good for that at all. I just stopped Prilosec for that very reason as warned by the FDA. I know I had to use cement blocks back in the 70's, but they do make a very solid plastic block now for the feet of beds to raise them. That would be my first suggestion if she only gets it at night. Hope this helps her.
Hello buzzlessbee I think by the account you have given here is your darling Mom has Gerd which is a shocking conditions, I have it & found that if a person sleeps on raised pillows at night helps with the acid rising up your throat also one big help for me was to change my diet, which is as follows ! cut down on fat in the diet, try to cut out all foods containing acid (in some fruit & veg ) all pastry products, sausages, lastly all carbonated drinks that will add to the acid reflux to come up. I wish your precious Mom all the best & suggest she still go to the doctor for help, sometimes certain medication can have a effect on reflux so see what the doctor can do . God bless to you & your precious Mother may this problem be sorted soon ! love Candypq
Your mother should definitely go to the doctor. The acid can ause serious problems (I forget what they are, but there are some). I am sure if you read the warnings on the OTC medicine boxes - I am sure they indicate to not take them indefinitely. Really, your mom needs this addressed by a professional.
I was taking prilosec twice a day regardless of my diet. i eliminated citrus, tomato dairy spicy foods, I got a slant pillow for my bed as I usually had to sleep sitting up and nothing made a difference if I stopped the prilosec. I was recommended by my herbalist to start taking "Aloe Life"Herbal aloe "Stomach Plus Formula". I took it 3 times a day for 3 weeks and stopped the prilosec . I then tapered it off and only take it maybe once every two days. I sleep like a baby. No sore throats, endless burping, chest pain. it is really a miracle cure for me. It is a liquid, a little strange to taste but worth anything.I DO NOT work for this company!I am a retired 69 year old woman who was told by my medical doctor that due to my age it was something I would have to put up with for the rest of my life.I was concerned about the side effects of Prilosec and that was why I searched around for an alternative
