I was in the ER with stomach pain, nausea, hyperhydrosis. For the nausea Zofran was injected into my IV and within very few seconds my left arm turned blotchy purple and began to itch. The only drug on the list for contraindications that I take is tramadol, but I am allergic to penicillin, sulfa, aspirin. What is there in a Zofran injection that might have caused this reaction?

The reaction was so fast that the person administering the injection didn't make it past the curtain on his way out. I told him I thought we may have found a new drug I'm allergic to. They brought an injection of diphenhydramine (I assume so because he said it was Benadryl) and put it into the IV. Burns like crazy but works faster. I told them that I would need the name of the drug they gave me to add to my collection of allergies. But it puzzles me that so far it seems unlike any of the other drug families. Years ago I was told after a reaction to sulfa that it was similar in chemical structure to aspirin. Yet with aspirin, I get anaphylactic and with sulfa I get just a rash. Thanks for your answer.
There could be an additive that you are allergic to, or the med itself. Usually we react faster to a med if its given IV. The inactive ingredients are 9mg of salt, 0.5mg of citric acid and 0.25 mg sodium citrate dihydrate. None of those additives fall under the things you are known to be allergic too. I'm curious, what did they tell you and how did they treat? I am kind of iffy on it being an allergy as it was only your arm.
I had the same experience in the ER recently. Zofran was injected in my IV and before they were done I got an itchy red burning blotchy rash. I was given Benadryl and it subsided. Later a tech told me he looked up Zofran and there is a "band of sulfa" in it. Not sure what that means but he said mine was the first reaction because of sulfa allergy he had seen in 15 years.

Is it ok to cut zofran in 1/2 or 1/4 when taking? and is it ok for general nausea and upset stomach?
