I take Tramadol 50 mg twice a day, and have a scrip for Vicodin for pain, but try not to use it alot. Is it safe to take Ambien with these meds, or is there something better anyone could recommend?
I have RA, am in constant pain. Lots of trouble sleeping. What can I do or take to help me sleep?

once I manage to finally get to sleep I wake up several times a night, then have trouble getting back to sleep. I have heard that Ambien should not be used on a regular basis? Is it safe? What else is there?
I have RA, OA, FM, migraines, etc. I found the best combo that helps me sleep is two 500mg capsules of valerian, 5mg of melatonin, and sometimes a warm bath with epsom salts before I go to bed. Also, give yourself about an hour before bedtime to relax. Turn off the tv and read a book.
These really help me get into deep sleep so my body can regenerate the hormones for pain fighting and repair my body as it needs to.
You also need to learn to de-stress maybe by meditating. This allows your body to fight the disease as well as rid the pain.
can you afford to go to a stress clinic that teaches relaxation techniques? I'm prone to spasms, even seizures-and had a leg that started spasming with great pain because of a recent injury. I was dating a French doctor that was teaching some courses about Medics Sans Frontiere. He was lost on the campus and I had some French. He saw my leg spasms, the meds I took, and he gave them time to work. Then he taught me self-hypnotism. It took a while for it to really work. One day my leg stated twitching so bad- I almost couldn't stand on it. I got to the rest room, put myself under, and rubbed my leg, saying that when I came out, my leg would relax and work well. When I came out, my leg immediately stopped the painful spasms and worked like a real leg. I don't know if you are religious-but if you are-doctors have used brain monitors on people- and people that meditate or pray have results for relaxation-and generally heal quicker.
The last time I was at the large clinic that my doctor's office is in, they have relaxation clinics posted that teach self-hypnotism among other things. Right now I'm suffering from poisoning from a medication the doctor told me to take. I'm getting better than many people-Part of getting better is hamstring exercises and ice packs-I use self-hypnotism. I was urinating black from dead muscle cells for over 2 months and I should still be doing that, but I believe that my personal faith and self-hypnotism changed my urine back to normal. Last week, my dentist told me that some people took statins and 6 months later came in on walkers. I'm slowly improving. When this first hit me, I had trouble sleeping from pain in my feet and back spasms-and other places-hips, small of my back, fear from knowing that it's permanent damage.
I didn't believe in hypnotism and only went through the sessions to please mon ami. He had to leave for Iran, but he left me with a gift greater than rubies and diamonds-self-hypnotism. You can use this with meds and not suffer any side effects. I'm doing this 2-3 X/day. In the am, the afternoon and at bed time.
Hello. Wanted to add another idea for you. Have you been checked for sleep apnea? It is common and causes one to wake up frequently. With all these meds one takes, breaking through them to breathe can cause a nasty cycle of awakening, feeling pain, drifting off, gulping for breath and so forth.
Since anyone can have this, I thought I would suggest it.
