I have only been not smoking for 3 days..I have never had anxiey or depression issues before. I do NOT want to take a drug for the rest of my life. Advice?
I wouldnt take anything. It is normal to feel some anxiety when quitting smoking. It is short term and will pass in a few weeks. It is better to get counseling to get you through. Try going on the American Lung Association website. They have a smoking cessation program. You might also talk to your health insurance company-many now have telephonic counseling for smoking cessation. Congratulations on your decision to quit!! Quitting smoking is singularly the BEST thing you can do to improve your health, if you smoke! You dont want to get yourself hooked on antianxiety meds like Ativan or Xanax either! If your anxiety is very severe then a short term antianxiety drug might be needed but only sparingly and for a very short time.
I don't think I would go on cymbalta. It may take you a month to get use to it. By then if you have severe anxiety you won't be smoke free. How about something like Visteral. Not habit forming, might make you alittle tired but will take care of anxiety pretty quickly. Will not however take care of depression. How about Wellbutrin? Some people tolerate that well. I was allergic to it. Broke out in Hives, but has known many people that it has helped. Good Luck.
