I have really BAD anxiety my friend who is a docter says i should and my dad thinks I should take it but what exactly is the pill and could it help me
hi mason, I take Xanax as prescribed by my psychiatrist - normally it is a behavioral doctor who will prescribe this, like a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse/nurse practitioner, or a licensed psychotherapist will tell you to have your general family doc prescribe you this, with his or her blessing. It's a controlled substance and I am kind of surprised your physician friend and father would tell you that you need to take it. It sounds like you don't even know what it is, which tells me you are likely under the age of 18 and this probably is not the best med for you - there are other meds that might help you that are not controlled substances. Xanax is widely abused by thousands or even millions of people in this country. It can be deadly if it is mixed with alcohol, also. I know how awful bad anxiety feels and how much it weighs you down and makes you feel helpless and scared - there are very good meds that can help you so I'd see my doctor if I were you - he or she can talk to you about your options!
Hello Mason. Xanax is used for treating anxiety. It is short acting, 4to6 hours usually. It calms symptoms like panic and fear. It is addictive and must be used carefully. There is more to read at the Xanax page. Just do a search with our Drugs A to Z.
What is Xanax?
Xanax (alprazolam) belongs to a group of drugs called benzodiazepines. It works by slowing down the movement of chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced. This results in a reduction in nervous tension (anxiety).
Xanax is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and anxiety caused by depression.
Xanax may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Depending on the duration of your anxiety if it is generalized or some other type. You might want to take something that works for you all day. Personally Xanax does nothing for me I suffer from GAD and my anxiety is off the charts. Benzodiazepines are supposedly very addictive though I personally find barbiturates to be more dangerous in that respect I guess we are all different.
