I saw my doctor last Monday the 15th of July. She prescribed me Xanax. 0.25 mg-30 pills with a refill for another 30 for my terrible anxiety and panic attacks. I have a one month follow up appointment on August 19th. The directions on the bottle says, "Take 1 Tablet By Mouth Every Day As Needed For Anxiety" Monday I took one pill at work. The next day I took two, one at work and the other at night so I could drive home calmly. The next day three. I never have taken any more than three a day and when I do take three a day it's never at the same time. It will be one in the morning then many hours later one at work then many hours later one at night to help me drive home and go to sleep. I don't feel like I am abusing my prescription since my anxiety is off the charts and this medicine really does help me through out the day. It's almost been a week and out of the 30 pills I got Monday I have about 15 left. I'm not concerned about it since I have one refill before I see my doctor in one month. My question is, if I tell my doctor that I take about 3-4 pills every day will she think I am abusing it? I don't use my medicine to get high, I don't take 2 or 3 at once. I feel that I am being responsible with it, making sure that it's been at least 4-5 hours before taking another dose. I'm afraid that, if I get a refill before my appointment it will look bad. I don't want my doctor to think I am abusing my medicine. I also want to ask her if it is possible to up my dosage from 0.25mg to .5mg. How would I go about that? What things should I say? I'm starting to notice that I need more of my medicine to do the job when one was doing the job. I want to be honest with my doctor, I do NOT want to be off of Xanax, I don't know what I would do, I think I would have a nervous break down and my anxiety attacks would be much more frequent and harsh. Help?
You aren't taking it as ordered, and that will be considered abuse to your dr. xanax is a controlled medication and you're going to run out before the 30 days. She didn't order enough for you, xanax does not work once a day, but she ordered it that way and that is the way you're expected to take it. When you run out, you won't be able to refill it before the 30 days. Tell her its not working at that dose. Have you tried taking something like zoloft or buspar? These are meds that prevent anxiety so you don't need much xanax.
I agree with kaismama, you aren't taking enough to help you out. Ativan works differently than Xanax, it lasts much longer, try to get her to give you those, see how it goes? If you don't like Ativan ask for more Xanax, it works great for me, I certainly understand why you are taking it.
But give a longer acting Benzo a try first, then ask for an increase in Xanax. I've never had luck with the antiD's but some people find them quite helpful for panic disorder.
Wishing you the best,
Hi! i used before Ativan and it dind't really help me with my anxiety and panic attacks, then MD prescribed me Xanax for few days and it worked really good for me but after that he didn't wnat to prescribe me more meds he said i have to go to a psychologist and try to not depend of medications. i need advise please how to get rid of this??? everything started since i had a car accident 4 years ago...
Bless your heart, I have been where you are. I would be really surprised if you can get that refill before the 30 days are up. I am currently on Xanax 1mg
up to 5 per day, but can usually get by on 4. It took time to get here. I literally had to go thru hell for months while taking lower doses so my doc could see how I reacted to each dose.During my 1st couple of months I could barely function. My pain doc said he prescribes like a ladder. Start at the bottom, give it time to see what it is going to do. I had to go 6 weeks at each dose as we slowly increased. It took a long time to get where I am, but at least the pain doc is convinced I need it. I found that asking for anything labels you as a "drug seeker", and you must play their game or go elsewhere where they may be more understanding. It was made clear to me on 1st visit that they weed out the seekers. Meaning pretty much he had to see me in bad shape b4 he would up my dose. I wanted to seek help else where, but either the waiting list was 6 months or longer or they were not seeing new patients. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place. I truly feel I suffered to satisfy the docs reasoning for giving me more. Pain docs can be your best friend, but many times it takes TIME to work up to that level. I wish you the best of luck... Be well as can be...
Dear MacklemoreBabee9 ~ I am prescribed .5 mg of Xanax 4 times daily. I know several people who take a higher dose than me. I've been taking Xanax for over 3 years now, and at first I was given a lower dose. It took a few months for my doctor to increase my dose to where I'm at now. I take them due to anxiety I suffer as a result of having a case of chronic hives (which I've had for over 4 years now).
It seems to me that your doctor is giving you an extremely low dose. If I were you, I'd phone the doctor's office and explain to the nurse what you've told us. He may approve your adjusted dose over the phone. At the very least, you'll be advising the doctor that you could use a raise in dosage.
Good luck to you!
