I'm 18 and my boyfriend and I wish to become sexually active (we're both virgins). I've been doing some research on effective contraceptive methods and had recently discovered this method. My period is "regular" to me, only coming once every other month. It's been like that for the past couple years. I have a few questions: 1) How long does it take for the insertion to kick in? How long would we have to wait to have sex before the insertion is in full effect? 2) Would he be able to "finish" inside without any worries? 3) Would this method still be safe to use even with my odd period times?
You would not need to use any other forms of contraception if the Implanon is inserted between Day 1 to 5 of your cycle (day 1 being the first day of your period). You would have immediate contraceptive cover - your partner would be able to "finish" without worrying.
If the Implanon was inserted at any other time you would need to use a back-up method of contraception for 7 days.
It would not matter that your periods are irregular. It is still an option for you to consider.
