I have been on Lexapro for about 3 years. I also take adderal. I am considering weening off the lexapro beacause I don't feel like it is really working. I am very tired all the time and just need the adderal to wake me up... not focus. I was on 20mgs and have decided to go down to 10. I have been doing this for about 2 weeks. I am starting to feel more emotions where before on the Lexapro, I just kinda felt like a zombie all the time. I am howerver having a few withdraw symtoms such as teeth chattering, brain fogginess. My goal is to get completely off and see if my depression comes back being just on the Adderall. It just seems the adderal doesnt help the wait it should because is is fighting against the Lexapro. I want to try something natural but would not be opposed to taking a new drug. just want to make sure it is the best thing for me. My doc has increased the lexapro once but I dont think that is the answer. Help:-).
Question about Lexapro?
Added 26 Jul 2011:
I have been doing some reading that Omega 3 is good to help depression. Anyone heard of that? Also, one thing I have noticed in my tappering of this.. I think I have been on 10mgs for 2weeks now from 20mgs, I go to bed at night and do not wake up once until the morning, with the 20mgs, I was waking up alot in the night, I am still very tired during the day though and I am hoping this is just a side effect. I also know that working out will help. Even though I don't really feel like doing it, I know it will greatly benefit me. I do not like being tired all the time on Lexapro. My doc says that may be because I am not on enough medication but I am scared to go past 30. I really think I need to completely taper off, see if the depression symptoms come back and if they do, start something new.
First let me share that it is not unusual to have to change antidepressants after being on the same one for several years. I have had to change mine every few years to get continued relief. If you feel you don't need the antidepressant than continue on the slow taper taking several weeks to get off the Lexapro. If your symptoms return then consider trying a different antidepressant. There are many to choose from.
Once you are off the Lexapro, you can re evaluate the sleepiness and whether you need the adderall. If you are just taking it to combat the sleepiness, you may want to investigate other means of controling the problem. If the sleepiness continues after stopping Lexapro, you may have a sleep disorder. Having a proper eval would be advisable. Sleeping too much can also be a symptom of the depression so keep that in mind.
There are natural aids for depression such as St. John's wort. Not sure how effective it is for clinical depression, but it might be worth a try depending on how severe your symptoms are. It is a trial and error sort of process. What works for one may not for another. Hope you find the relief you need.
Hello jan2222. I identify fully, as to the lexapro and fatique. Its the reason that I stopped taking it. I was on it less than two years. You might just need to taper ever so slowly to minumize the side effects. Not certain, if its a good idea, to be just on the adderal. Mind you, if you went that route and really noticed that you were beginning to feel worse, you known, the signs of depression coming back, you could try another medication. I could suggest a number of drugs, but rather leave that up to you and your doctor. Keep us posted, and the best to you.
When i have been weaned of an anti-depressant, my doctor will continue weaning me off the current anti-depressant, while starting a low dose of another. this way you won't have any severe rebound depression. i have been on just about every anti-depressant there is... i strongly dislike lexapro and celexa which is just a step down from lexapro. in my opinion they are horrible anti-depressants. just as LaurieShay was saying: i've needed to change my anti-depressants every yr or two also, in order to get the same stability with my depression, anxiety, ptsd, etc. i have also tried MANY natural supplements to my benefit. Here's the ones I reccoment that help with depression and anxiety, and even mood and sleep: 5 HTP, Gaba, St. John's Wort. these all worked wonders for me for a time in my life. if you're going to switch anti-depressants--i have found wonderful relief from Effexor XR. Other than that one i would reccoment pristiq, zoloft or prozac.
