My husband is getting ready to have spinal fusion surgery next month. He is in great pain. He is taking Vicodin 10-325. He takes 6-8 a day due to extreme pain. I'm worried about him and the quantity he is taking. Would this amount harm his liver? His surgery is on the 22 August?
Why dont they have him on a long acting drug? MSContin or Opana ER, Oxycontin or one of those? He would be much more comfortable and it wouldnt be conditioning his brain to equate pain relief with a rush flood of drug across the opioid receptors. He obviously has chronic pain issues which shouldnt be treated with short acting drugs!
Hi there. I can totally understand how you may be concerned. With short term use the liver. should be okay. Oxycodone HCL tabs do not contain acetaminophen, APAP does contain acetaminophen. I have just got to the 5 week post operative spinal fusion surgery. I was taking 6-8 10/325 tabs a day before surgery. When those became inaffective i was moved to Fentanyl patches (50 MCG/Hr). I used the 10/365 for breakthrough pain and the Fentanyl patch as my main pain releiver. Now that the surgery is behind me i take only (3) 10/365 per day. I understand the level of concern you may have but many reasons for taking the medicines is resolved with a good spinal fusion. Hope this helps.
Hi there Cmschneider and welcome to DC. Was your husband in some kind of accident that he is having this procedure? I am sure he is in pain, too, does he utilize any other methods of pain relief? For instance an ice pack for 15-20 minutes at a time or in any type of physical therapy to help ease the pain?
Does he see a pain management doctor already? The surgery is no walk in the park but I'm sure great strides have been made since my own surgery back in 2004.
I pray he does well and his surgery is uneventful with a full and complete recovery.
