I have PHN (post herpatic neurology). I had the shingles 1-1/2 years ago. I have tried everything to help my pain and burning. Nothing is working. MEGA doses of ibuprofen make it bearable but I need sleep and the ibuprofen is not good for my stomach. Do you think I should try Valium?
No it won't help the pain aside from relaxing you.
PHN is nerve pain.
Ibuprofen is not for nerve pain as you can see. It will affect your kidney function long-term.
You need to get a prescription for Gabapentin or Lyrica. Don't get discouraged if you don't get relief right away. They are different then taking a pain pill (Ibuprofen) for arthritis and feeling better within an hour.
You have to find the right dose at which it will work for you. You would be on it long term and they won't kill your kidneys.
The trick is to reach the right doses as soon as possible. As you go through this process, do yourself a favor and call the office if the dose isn't working. Don't wait for the 2-3 month follow up.
You need to take care of yourself and be healthy because getting proper nutrition, plenty of water and exercising to whatever you can do. Monitor your sleep especially because pain tends to get worse at night. Sleep deprivation will pull your defenses down in fighting the pain.
Read up on meditation, deep breathing and cognitive behavioral therapy.
I hope people who have PHN answer you because I've had zoster but not what you are going through.
I think there may be a cream you can apply.
