From ages 2-5, I was prescribed 100 mg of Trazodone a day. Until recently, I was unaware of what was going on. I have had many behavioral complications and was previously diagnosed with depression, anorexia, ADHD, RAD, high anxiety, and possibly bipolar disorder. A month or so ago, my mom and I decided that I should get a psych evaluation, and that's when the issue was uncovered about my past. Not long after, I learn that I am autistic. Also, my biological parents both had drug problems when I was young, which resulted in my removal from the home. Could the illegal drugs done by my parents and the high dosages of Trazodone as a toddler have caused my autism?
So sorry you had a tough start. I do hope your current home is a good place to be. The cause of autism seems to be a disruption of the developing nervous system during pregnancy causing the brain to form a bit differently. Not your fault. The difference is being understood much better these days. Depending where you are on the autism spectrum scale, and since you wrote you are doing well, there are many new techniques to help train the brain. The best news out there is that we have found the brain can be trained and areas that didn't develop can be developed and the brain will grow the needed neurons. I think you are going to be fine. My nephew is high functioning autism. Computer genius. He may get confused paying a bill. But he is amazing on the computer and did his PhD Masters in two years. There is much awaiting you. Please contact the Autism Society. Be careful about all the lies out there. It is not about your parents drug use or immunizations.
That is just a bunch of misinterpretations. It is about what you can do in life and how you get there. No matter what your birth parents were like, and how that early pregnancy went, you are here, hopefully properly diagnosed and can have a good life. Set your goals high and find what is your special talent. We all have one. That leads to happiness. And by the way, my parents were with me as I grew up. They smoked, drank constantly and later did street drugs. We were neglected. I made it through that because I recognized they were very hurting people. Good luck in your research. :-)
