... but the people i've seen in the past haven't really helped me. Does counseling really help or am i just going to be wasting more time?
It is good to go to a psychiatrist if your doctor thinks you may be bipolar. If you make sure that the psychiatrist you go to specializes in Bipolar disorders and PTSD then you will get an accurate diagnosis and the meds you need. Also get the psychiatrist refer you to a psychologist or therapist so that you get the right one for your needs.
I didn't like the idea of going to a psychiatrist but now that I have been going for awhile I am not sorry that I did as I am doing so much better with my PTSD and finding out I was bipolar which can be treated very effectively. Best of all my psychiatrist matched me with psychologist that suits me perfectly so my talk therapy really helps.

Seeing a psychiatrist is a good idea if you possibly have a bipolar disorder just make sure you go to one that specializes in Bipolar Disorders and PTSD so that you get an accurate diagnosis and the meds that you need. Also the psychiatrist can recommend or refer you to a psychologist that suits your needs so that it is not a waste of your time.
I didn't like the idea of going to a psychiatrist to start with but I am not sorry that I did now. My PTSD is much better with the med I was given and now I know that I have Bipolar and we are working on the right meds for that (I won't trust any type of doctor other than my psychiatrist on this). An added bonus for me is that my psychiatrist referred me to a psychologist who suits me to a tee so my talk therapy really helps.
Remember that Bipolar is a genetic and/or chemistry imbalance illness that is more common than people realize and if you have it that it isn't your fault
