I've been on Paxil for 15 years and it just stopped working all of a sudden. Doc started me on buspar to see if it will help raise my Seratonin levels and possibly get my Paxil working again. I hope it works because this anxiety is very debilitating. I have no life.
Buspirone is not an SSRI medication, but I read a statement when researching this med before I starting taking it that I will copy and paste here that might be helpful:
"Buspirone produces anxiolytic effects via postsynaptic receptor activity, while its activity at autoreceptors initially suppresses neuronal firing but gradually restores serotonergic neurotransmission"
So It sounds like even tho it's not an SSRI, it may restore your ability to absorb the SSRI medication Paxil that you were on. I hope it works for you too, anxiety is very debilitating. I have only taken benzo medications for the last 10 years for my anxiety and just recently started Buspirone to try to phase the clonazepam out. The doctor says it doesn't work as well in patients that have been on benzo medications for long periods of time, but it's possible so I'm praying for a miracle! Good luck to you, I hope this helps give you some faith that it may make your Paxil work again.
Hi Trp! I've added you to my list of friends, and Mademychoice, you've been on my list for a while. Trp, I had just about the same experience as Made did with taking buspar. I used to take lorazepam, but my current doctor refuses to prescribe it, so she prescribed buspar instead. I had also taken clonoazepam in the past. I had a wonderful experience with buspar even though I had taken those benzos in the past. I couldn't believe that it had never been suggested to me before, because it has been a lifesaver for me! I also, like Mademychoice, got tired at a higher dose, but at 5mg twice a day, it works, along with my wellbutrin sr. You and your doctor can decide on what dose you need.
I have been much more social since I started taking it. I am a worrier and a ruminator, and buspar has improved the quality of life for me. I think I've been taking it for about a year now. I highly recommend that you give it a good try. It's so much safer and easier on your system than the benzos.
Wishing you luck! "G"
