my great grandson age 8 has severe OCD, ADHD and bi-polar. he has been on numerous medications but nothing has done much good, his Dr said if he does not improve with a recent medication increa se she will try him on prozac. I have mixed feelings about this. Any information would be deeply appreciated.
Pediatric dose of Prozac: Pediatric (children and adolescents) — In the short-term (8 to 9 week) controlled clinical trials of fluoxetine supporting its effectiveness in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder, patients were administered fluoxetine doses of 10 to 20 mg/day. Treatment should be initiated with a dose of 10 or 20 mg/day. After 1 week at 10 mg/day, the dose should be increased to 20 mg/day.
However, due to higher plasma levels in lower weight children, the starting and target dose in this group may be 10 mg/day. A dose increase to 20 mg/day may be considered after several weeks if insufficient clinical improvement is observed.
Also, maybe seeking a second opinion would be helpful, do take care, best wishes to your great grandson.
When I was a child and suffered from ocd and bipolar (I still do obviously lol), my dr rarely gave me medicine. He told my mother he wanted to wait till I at least hit my teen years because a childs brain is constantly growing and it is hard to say what is the childs behavior and personality and what is the disorder. Now obviously it ranges case to case. Some children have a lot more severe disorders who need medicine to even function normally. I was put on a strict diet. Sugars were cut out and I actualy had to drink coffee in the morning . It acted as a stimulant and helped me pay attention in class. I'm now older and take zoloft which does nothing for my ocd but I would start the child on a very small dose and see how it goes. You know your child best :) hope it all works out
I personally do not agree with the psychiatric labelling of children and I think drugging them does more harm than good. Children are constantly changing and growing. They have many moods and emotions and all this is part of growing up and learning to cope . They need a healthy start in life with healthy food , not harsh chemicals every day. The situation is getting out of control and I would like to see all psychotropic drugs banned for children. I know that Prozac can actually cause suicidal thoughts. It is crazy to be giving this to young kids!
