Hi, my father (who is 65) NEEDS a mitral valve heart replacement (due to past complications with Endocarditis whilst already having a damaged mitral valve). He is getting more sick by the day but is putting off the operation as he is TERRIFIED about having it done. I know this is a big ask, but can anyone provide me with a surgical procedure explanation that i can show him/read to him that won't freak him out? He is considering this op' will kill him... Thank you in advance!!!
This surgery is done frequently. I know that doesn't help his fear. Here is a video about it... clevelandclinic.org/lp/heart_surgery/mitral_valve.html
I just watched one on youtube believe it or not. You can go to youtube and check it out. I don't think that one is going to be something he could watch.
I have a friend that is a doctor that performs this type of surgical procedure on a regular basis and we talked about it for me as something to look at in the future. He gave me a couple of pamphlets that were well written that I think we're published by the American Heart Association that explained the whole process, so that I could see that even though the operation is a bit long it is fairly routine surgical procedure for the doctor that does them. So ask your doctor for the pamphlets about the operation or go on line to the AHA and look it up on their site. I am 68 and just had another operation done and have to wait till I completely heal from this before they will even consider this. Hope this helps
