I got prescribed promethazine 25mg tablets by my GP as I have been having trouble sleeping recently. As a person who has never taken prescription medicines, are there any really bad effects of this drug and, if so, how can I reduce the effects? I am 18 years old. Thank you.
This medicine is mainly used for nausea and vomiting. I take it 4 times a day and have for over 30 yrs. It can have a drowsy like affect if you are not used to it. You are so very young. I would rather you take something like this other than some sleeping pills that are highly addictive. The only side effect I have had with this drug is dry mouth and sleepiness. For someone who has not taken a lot of meds, this will help you sleep. Chewing gum and drinking plenty of fluids will help with the dry mouth. Best of luck to you, hon. ChelleKay
There aren't any serious side effects to this medication but it will definitely make you very drowsy and cause daytime drowsiness. There are two serious side effects that are a rare occurrence but very fatal, these two rare occurrences are called neuroleptic malignant syndrome and the second one is called tardive dyskinesia. But remember what I said these are a very rare occurrence.
