I have been advised by my general practitioner to take a probiotic to boost my immune system and for more regularity.
Despite doing some research on the subject I can't decide if they'll work for me or if there an unnecessary dietary supplement?
Also, there's so many to choose from depending upon your symptoms and the amount of "strains" per pill.
Lastly, due to the cost of these Probiotics I was wondering if anyone could recommend a specific type or brand?
Unfortunately, my Insurance will not pay for them.
Any & all information shared would be appreciated.
Probiotics, myth or the real thing?
bestpup; This and many other things of these so-called natural medicine and such I am very leery of dut to the lack of testing. I copied this not from a well-known doctor.Do probiotic supplements work?
But your body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called "good" or "helpful" bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy. Probiotics are naturally found in your body. You can also find them in some foods and many brands and yogurt etc. ))) ALSO BESTPUP DID YOU KNOW THAT OUT OF 60 MILLION PEOPLE OVER 20% HAVE STOOL, STOMACH, AREBOWEL'S AND ONE FORM OF DISCOMFORT FROM THE IBS THAT JUST ABOUT EVERYONE CLAIMS AND AS THIS GOES THERE ARE TO MANY THING TO DATE This NOT KNOWN ABOUT THE GI TRACT AND STOMACH. nOW YOU KNOW THAT ONE THING IS YOU NEED THE BACTERIA IN YOUR STOMACH IF YOU KILL OF THE GOOD AND THE BAD YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE MORE PROBLEMS. at this time I go with my gut and say save your money. I HAVE SEEN SO MANY Things COME AND GO AND IT'S ALL ABOUT PROFIT AND THE FACT THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO SPEND THE MONEY BECAUSE MANY OF THESE ARE MARKETED AS A FOOD PRODUCT LIKE VITAMINS AND DO NOT HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE Drug screening etc. And of course there are some that benefit with these but many would also get the same relief if you gave them a fake pill. So to be honest I say take a wait and see for now. And just treat your symptoms. until they really do know more about the way the stomach works. I really hope this helps but I have to feel better about myself and way too many people when I was still working these just did next to nothing. Chuck1957 time well tell.
I don't know how much help these probiotics are. Here is my personal experience: I have taken many antibiotics in the past for various conditions. I was told that when you take an antibiotic, it disturbs the flora in your gut. It kills the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria, so it needs to be replenished, and probiotics are supposed to serve this purpose.
I have taken FloraJen3 for years which has to be refrigerated and taken on an empty stomach. This probiotic was recommended to me by several pharmacies and my compounding pharmacy as the best probiotic to fulfill this purpose.
Unfortunately, even though I took these, I developed a bad case of diverticulitis last spring. I was treated for it, it cleared up after a few months.
My gastroenterologist was firm about me continuing to take probiotics for healthy gut flora. He suggested one by "Pure Encapsulations Probiotics", which I ordered online - 60 capsules for $20. The woman I ordered them from sent them in a package with a cold pak and I was very pleased. She also sent me a follow-up email to see if I was satisfied with my order, which I certainly was.
I read online after this, that it is better to take your probiotic capsule with a meal because it needs the fat in the meal to help the digestive tract to get the most benefit from it.
Confusing? Yes, but for me, I would rather be safe than sorry, so I continue to take probiotics to this day. Fortunately, my IBS problems have remained under control. So that is my story. Hope it helps!
