had upper endoscopy done. nothing serious showed up (I am 71) so he ordered omeprazole for me "for 14 days only". the new dr. of gastroenterology & hepatology is well known with an active practice. so now I have two different doctors with two different opinions. have any of your doctors told you that long term use of this drug is not recommended?? thx, bill
Long term use of Omeprazole is NOT recommended by me as a patient and I was given the medication for Hpylori and the doctor told me to "just keep taking it" for the GERD. Well, I had so many bad affects from this medication and wish I never started it. So I have to agree with the doctor who said the long term use is not recommended. I have stopped taking it 6 months ago and still trying to deal with the heartburn... it is slowly subsiding but has been a bad 6 months.
I am glad that I came across this post, for my gi doc kept prescribing this med for me and I told him it wasn't working and he keep saying to give it time etc... never once told me that long term use was a problem... well I can only wish u the best in health dear, but want to thank u for giving me some insight for I use to take protonix and it helped me great, no I have problems swallowing so bad that I litterally have to spit food out of my mouth so I do choke to death... looks like I will be looking for another GI as well... wishing u nothing but great health and happiness...
My mom had severe knee pain for the 3 years she was told to take PPI. In 2.5 weeks of a 4 week weaning off period, the pain "vanished". She has also has the "swallowing" thing, where pills and food had a hard time going down. She is doing a little better after 2 mos off, but may take some time. Hopefully completely better in a few more months.
Check forums for alternatives to PPIs. The main thing that completely help me to have NO GERD was to eat "whole" foods, no processed crap, no dairy, no breads, sugar, wht rice or potatoes. 6 mos lost 50 pounds and never had one day of heartburn. My GI told me I would be on it for the rest of my life. Also I had a headache "everyday" while on PPI.
Also try DGL, a supplement used for heartburn, my sister uses, along with Slippery Elm, it has decreased her heartburn a lot. Weght loss is the best thing you can do and when sleeping or resting, be on your left side. Heck out forums and Dr (MD) websites that have new and improved methods to treat heartburn instead of just giving a pill.
