You can't really prevent bladder infections per se, but if you're prone to them you should take cranberry extract (herbal supplement) on a daily basis. And you shouldn't be taking antibiotics as preventative medicine. That's one of the worst things you could do. Antibiotics should only be used when necessary as they wipe out all our healthy flora and certain "germs" are becoming resistant to antibiotic treatment. So, there are herbs you can take to support a healthy urinary tract. Also, Bactrim is most often used for UTI'S. So taking doses of antibiotics will do more harm than good. You can go to any natural grocer and talk about recommended supplements to promote a healthy urinary tract. Best regards!
Hello harrygary, & welcome to the site. If you are a male, have you had your prostate checked lately? It would be a good idea for you to see your doctor about this. There could be more going on than you think like prostitis. My doctor has tod me that cranberry juice doesn't cure a bladder infection, just neutrlizes the acidity. You can go to the pharmacy & buy AZO & give it a try, but I really suggest you see your doctor & get this checked out completly. Self treatment is not a good idea, & you shouldn't have left over antibiotics from anything unless you were changed to a stronger one for some condition, but cupcake is right. There are better antibioitics tha a Z pak for bladder or kidney infections (or prostitis). Cupcake is right tho'. There are better antibiotics for bladder or kidney infections.
Since you don't even know what is going on whether it's an infection of the bladder, kidney or prostate, or even a prolapse of the urethea, you need to be checked out first before treatment. ...
Depends on whether this is one bladder infection or several, and what bacteria or condition is causing it. Frequent UTIs and pain can be caused by Intersistial Cystitis, and the treatment for that is a daily, low dose of an antibiotic. This needs to be diagnosed by a Urologist. And if you should happen to have IC, it's recommended to avoid all citrus fruits, which can trigger flare ups. So if your UTIs are close together, it's time for a Urology work up. Regardless if it is one UTI or several, it is very necessary to have your urine tested for what bacteria is causing the problem before an antibiotic is used. Regards - ElizaJane
