Premature Labor - what is the first choice drug to stop premature labor?

It depends on when in the pregnancy it occurs and what is causing the preterm labor. I would say, most often, just to stop contractions, then it would be terbutaline. Indomethacin and nifedipine are also sometimes used and occasionally magnesium sulfate. Sometimes antibiotics are started if the water breaks and if the pregnancy is very early then betamethasone or dexamethasone to help mature infant lungs. Hope this helps some.
