Dear ABY, welcome to the site. Normally the pills instructions say to start them on the first Sunday of your period. If you started these last Tuesday and did NOT use a back up for the first 3 weeks, really even the first week, YES, you could be pregnant, as you did NOT follow the precautions, but you likely will not be able to tell yer.. You will have to wait about 3 weeks, to take a test and see if you are pregnant. You should use a back up method until you have used the first 21 active pills correctly, one per day. So if I were you, I would use a back up method for the rest of the active pills, then take a test if you do NOT start during the inactives, and if it is negative, continue to take your active pills one per day.
You had no more protection from pregnancy then someone not taking the pill. You have to be more responsible if you don't want to get pregnant. Take your pill at roughly the same time every day, don't forget it. Put a reminder on your phone and keep them where you see them. I would use back up until you get to the inactive pills now. You haven't really had much of an effect from the pills yet.
Birth control pills are not magic, they need time to work in the body to do what they do and that is first and formost to prevent you from ovulating. They work best if you start them either Day 1 of your menstrual period or the first Sunday after but even then they usually require at LEAST a week to kick in to work as the only contraceptive. You should use condoms as back up at LEAST the first seven days, even better, the first whole cycle or pack of pills. You didnt really give them any time to work. Then to top it all off you missed pills. Each time you miss a pill you increase the risk of getting pregnant because that gives the body a chance to allow the release of an egg. Missing them early on like this could be very detrimental. As to your pregnancy test showing negative, it is too early to detect pregnancy yet. Again, test are not magic, they work on science.
there is a hormone released by pregnant women in their urine called human chorionic gonadotropin or HCG. HCG is only released when a woman is pregnant and this is what causes the pregnancy test to react. IF you did get pregnant, a few days is not enough time to build up a detectable level in the urine. You will just have to wait and see if your period is delayed. It takes about 3-4 weeks before you can detect a pregnancy with a OTC tester so this occurs about the time you miss a period. One thing in your favor, chances for pregnancy are not favorable every single time you have sex and pregnancy can be harder to obtain than one might think. It always seems easier to get pregnant when you are NOT trying however! You may have lucked out this time. Time will tell. In the meantime, keep taking your pills as the come in the pack. You need to use condoms as back up until you finish the pack. When you miss a pill, you should use back up, like condoms, for the seven days following the miss to allow for an egg, if one is released, to move through the reproductive system and out of the body and allow the hormones in the pill to supress ovulation again. DO NOT use any hormonal pills like Plan b or Next Choice in addition to the Pill. This is too much hormone and will screw you cycle up so bad it will take months to get it straight! Also remember that a male withdrawing the penis before ejaculation offer NO protection against pregnancy because men secrete sperm all throughout sex, not just at ejaculation, although many more are released at this time. If you get to the end of your pack and you still have not gotten a period, this is the time to test. If the test is negative then, go ahead and start your next pack. If you miss two periods in a row, you need to see your Dr. If the test comes up positive, you are pregnant and should not start another pack of pills. Dont worry, a few weeks of pills wont hurt the baby but you do have some other decisions to make then. Here are the instructions for your birth control pill. Please read them carefully and follow them from now on.
If you have a negative pregnancy test answer, and you are bleeding, you are very fortunate to be most likely not pregnant and starting your menstral cycle.
However don't have unprotected sex again, until you have taken a month of birth control. And don't forget to take your pill!! Everyday!!
