I am about to deliver in the next 2 weeks. I am taking 150mg of venlafaxine and 4 mg of risperidone. can i breastfeed my baby
Small amounts of Venlafaxine hydrochloride are passed through breast milk. Because the drug could potentially cause serious side effects to a nursing infant, the manufacturer of Venlafaxine recommends that women stop breastfeeding if they are taking Venlafaxine or stop Venlafaxine if they will continue to breastfeed.
Practically, most docs advise their patients that it is okay to breastfeed while taking Venlafaxine. This is because, in most cases, the benefits of breastfeeding a child outweigh the possible risks. Furthermore, there have been no known reported incidents of problems with breastfeeding infants whose mothers are taking Venlafaxine.
Risperidone is passed through breast milk. Because of the potentially serious side effects that could occur in the nursing infant, the manufacturer of Risperidone does not recommend that women who are breastfeeding use Risperidone. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or thinking of breastfeeding and have been prescribed Risperidone, please let the doc know.
Please consult your gynecologist who shall give you more professional advice, take care be safe & well.
