Hi
Have you been to your doctor about your pregnancy? Is he aware or did you just find out?
Your best bet is to contact your gp,they say you should'nt take xanax while pregnant but if you've only been taking xanax a couple of weeks and a small amount then you should'nt have trouble stopping, but i would get doc's advice first before making any decisions. But try get off the xanax asap.
Best of luck and congrats on your pregnancy
Just be sure that you do let the obstetrician/or medical doctor know, if you are taking this at night only just to help you sleep still be sure that the physician taking care of you is aware of this, if you are taking it on a regular basis then you need to talk with the doctor as soon as you can, Xanax is a benzodiazepine and is not a drug that you are suppose to abruptly discontinue if you have been taking just one at bedtime that should make it easier but by all means let your doctor know that you have been using this and tell him how much time you have been using it and also tell him how often you take it,
I know this is a concern but just try and take it easy I believe everything will be fine but the doctor needs to know for the safety of you and the baby
Hey dr_irina,
Alprazolam has been assigned to pregnancy category D by the FDA. An increased risk of congenital malformations in humans has been suggested with use of other benzodiazepines, although small studies have not implicated alprazolam. Withdrawal symptoms have been described in neonates whose mothers took alprazolam during pregnancy. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Alprazolam use is considered contraindicated during pregnancy.
So it is best to not use this medication during your pregnancy. You must taper off this medication, not stop abruptly. Please consult your doctor as soon as possible as on the appropriate way to get off this drug. Since you are on a low dose you should have little trouble tapering off this medication. You may find that your sleep disorder returns but for the sake of the baby you are going to have to deal with it drug free.
Wishing you and the baby the very best,
Laurie
