I was diagmosed with RA several years ago and have been on a terrible regimen of meds Began prednisone today to replace another med. I have many side effects and my spouse is angry at me for taking these meds. Is this a common problem?
Common problem: Angry spouse or worrying about the drug? Just a joke.
When you take prednisone the docs have a very good reason. But they need to know about side effects as you have them. When you are on lots of meds, removing one and starting a new one can make a difference.
Not sure why hubby is so upset. I do know that if I don't get support from others it makes me feel pretty sad. And mood swings can be a side effect. But so can people getting on my case. So ya gotta sort it out.
I tell you what I tell everyone worried about prednisone: talk to your doc right away. That is the one who is qualified to tell you what is what. A person can become depressed not just from meds but from facing a new health situation. Things just have to be sorted out.
Side effects would be good to know. First day on it sounds rather soon for anything except maybe hot flashes or something. I would be happy to talk more. Hang in there. Remember it is medicine and you need to report side effects to the doc.
almost anyone on pred has a different story to tell.
Are you on a biologic? I was on prednisone and after about a year of it, I gained 50lbs.
Then I was put on Humira along with sulfasalazine and methotrexate. The change is so much better.
Those three are the only ones designated for my RA. I have many varieties of pain killers to help me with FM, OS, among other chronic pain issues.
There are so many new drugs out for RA right now iIam surprised at your doctor for using prednisone as it can have lasting side effects such as bone loss for one. Another is it can effect the natural coritsone called cortisol that your own adrenal glands make. They can stop producing & will while on prednisone. It should only be used short term, unless nothing else has worked. Please, if you don't already subscribe to Arthritis today to get a list of meds tha can be used, such as Orencia, Enbrel, etc... All drugs come with a rish of course, but prednisone use for long term is old hat basically. My husband has to take Enbrel for psoriasis both skin & arthrictic kind, & it has helped tremendously. They also have a web sit I believe is ArthrisisToday.org
Please go there & subscribe to their magaize. It has the most wonderful helpful info available. I just signed my best friend who also has RA up for it & she was amazed at all the info & tips for RA that were in it. Best of luck to you I should have mentioned that my hubby is a diabetic too, so was leary of the Enbrel as it affects your immune system, but no problem in years now... Mary
Prednisone is the one drug that I cannot tolerate, it makes me rage, never ever felt so outta my own skin before, when I have had to take it, I took it backwords & at night time "while sleeping", or I couldn't stand myself, why r they changing everything all the time? R they still looking for the right drug??LOL there is NO right drug as fas as I am concerned, somedays I laystill & am just in awe how much my body is killlin me & how little the Dr.'s really care... I have "Glucoma" & they know it, & still the pharmacy I use catches them a lot giving me meds that interfere BIG time with my eyes... I just shake my head...
