I have had Postherpetic Neuralgia for a few months and feel shaky, nervous and depressed... I don't want to take tranquilizers as I am a heart patient with a defibrillator, a metal valve and have been on Coumadin for 17 years... Please help me and tell me if you also feel the shakiness and uncomfortable feeling as I do... Currently I am on no medication for PHN... I had two shots, done at separate times, injected into my back to relieve the itching and pain and they were of no value...
I have had PHN for over 4 yrs now, Im in constant pain never a break, I feel nervous, shaky, heart pounding all the time and I hate it..the only thing that ever worked for me as I finally broke down and took something was a anti anxiety medication, I had to have a break from it as none of the meds they gave me or nerve blocks, nerve burnings worked for my PHN .. Im not on anything right now as I dont like to stay on that for to long but im about ready to go and get a script the shaky nervous feeling is way to much for me, and the pounding heart is driving me insane... my pain is deep in my chest all around heart area which makes this even harder... hope u find something to help you as this is a horrible thing to deal with everyday :( talk to your heart Dr. for sure I bet they will have something for you to take for this ...
After one year of recurrent shingles, still some breakouts in the same area over and over, I still use lidocaine patches and/or cream. Gabapentin gave me electric shocks in the brain and arm or leg suddenly shooting outwards. After a couple weeks of high dose it calmed down with the patches. But I cut it back as fast as I could.
I keep telling people to get the vaccination. You can get it more than once in a life time. Had it when in mid twenties as well. Lucky for me it mainly itches fiercely and rarely gets too painful like the first round last January, 2013. That needed dilauded, hospital stay and was exquisitely painful as well as kept in isolation. Beyond belief. I wish all of you better health and far less pain.
The generic lidocaine patches are not nearly as good as the brand name is, if you can afford it. Be sure the doc writes no generics. The one I use now lasts six hours at best. The brand lists 24 hours. :-)
I am just going on 6 weeks and am trying to wean myself off of the gabapentin and baclofen. I think I'd rather deal with the pain than all the side effects from the medication. The gabapentin has been giving me tremors and puts me in a pretty bad head space (symptoms I've seen multiple times from other posters) Since over the counter lidocaine cream has been somewhat helpful, I'm inclined to try the prescription patches as it's something that doesn't have to be ingested. Once my system is clear of the gabapentin I plan to try Sam-e. It is said to have positive results for nerve pain and depression. I'll let you know how it goes.
