My boyfriend is tapering off of xanax currently, he doesn't talk much about it and has his days but I do believe he's getting help from a professional. He was prescribed it for anxiety, so when he's tapered off should he be still taking it for his anxiety? or another drug? will this just result in another addiction? does anyone have any experiences similar? i believe he also has depression but he's not taking anything for that, will that play a big part in all of this?
Hi Im 41 years old-bipolar and an addict... etc.
Xanax ( alprazolam) is a benzodiazepine and like all benzos they are very addicting, there are ways of dealing with this addiction that some say is tougher than heroin. I took Xanax for 10 years (very high dosages my tolerance level is very high).
You believe he is undergoing a mental depression, well he is cause it is one of the many side effects of the xanax.
The depression has to be treated, the withdrawls from benzos are hard ( I don´t want 2 bring u down, I am trying to keep this as low profile as I can ... ok) I ´ve been there.
Seek professional help right away. Look at various rehabilitation solutions and make sure that a specific benzodiazepine program is available.
Xanax withdrawal symptoms can include but are not limited to:
* Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
* A rapid heartbeat (tachycardia)
* Heart palpitations
* Memory loss
* Personality changes
* Sensitivity to sound or light
* Panic attacks
* Restlessness or irritability
Seizures are often the most dangerous possible withdrawal symptom. These are most likely to occur if Xanax is stopped "cold turkey," but they are also possible if the drug is not stopped slowly enough. Even forgetting a single dose of Xanax can lead to withdrawal symptoms. As your body gets used to the medication, you may even begin to experience withdrawal symptoms between your usual Xanax doses.
I hope I was of some help and it will take sometime to get him back on his feet..remember no matter if the drug is legal or illegal... you are dealing with an addict.. sorry to put tjis way... but that´s the way it is. when u have a chance read my profile if u want.
