I am in severe pain and use menthol vaporizing rub and/or icy hot pretty much on my entire body. I don't mean to be ignorant, but are there any possible side effects from over use? I really lather it on as it helps my sore joints and muscles tremendously. Any experience or advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
Is it possible to use too much menthol topical for its analgesic purpose?

I know about the FDA's warning of possible skin irritation and burns... so I am interested in other potential side effects - due to over use, if there is such a thing. Thanks.

To clarify what I'm asking... I guess my inquiry is to whether or not it could be "toxic" to use too much, mainly menthol, camphor, etc that is in vapor rubs, not the ones containing NSAIDS. Thanks again...
I don't know about over use issues but if your insurance/or if you can afford it- I would highly recommend Voltaren Gel. It is prescription & is basically a topical anti-inflammatory/ibuprofen type of med. I can't take these orally & finally found out about this gel. I was very doubtful. But, it really works!!! All the best!
Hi anjeegyrl, I also (years ago) used icy hot and other menthol creams constantly and never had an issue, no skin irritation, nothing.
I do know that aspercreme has a dosage schedule, so do be careful with anything that contains an NSAID.
Just thought I'd let you know that I'd no problems using those products, even Ben Gay! Those products certainly can help the pain of fibro. Just be ever careful if you use a heating pad in conjunction with the creams.
Best to you,
It is. I remember hearing a news report of a young girl dying from using too much sport cream. I was shocked because I always thought it a benign product. As always everything seems to have its drawback, limit or price. Recommend moderation- and keep looking and googling if you dont find the answers you need.
