I am on amitriptyline 25 mg and topiramate 50 mg nightly for migraine prevention. According to my neurologist there's no chance that 50 mg could be helping me at all, but I'm also on amitriptyline. She believes I MUST be on 100 mg for it to be preventing anything. Is it possible that a lower dose is capable of producing a therapeutic level?
I’ve been on topamax for 10 mos now. I’m 47 yrs old and I’m a nurse practitioner. I started having stabbing “ice pick” headaches in my late 20s and they worsened over the years to the point where it was affecting my life. They came out of nowhere and were scary. Then I started having vertigo sometimes with them, sometimes independent of them. I thought I was having mini strokes. I was scared to death. Had a full w/u by a neurologist and he signed off on me... ”nothing wrong with you” he said. I was at the end of my rope, my PCP put me on 25 mg/ day topamax, told me to increase to 50 mg a day after a week but i never could bring myself to do it because of the mental side effects... in fact, I felt like I was being poisoned. Over the following 3-4 weeks, I suddenly noticed OMG - headaches are slowly going away!!! And Mental fog got a little better, I stayed on 25 mg this whole time. Then after 10 mos, the hair loss!!! Seemed to happen all of the sudden. Today, I’m seriously thinking about cutting down to 12.5 mg a day to see if it keeps the headaches under control. That is why I came to this message board today, to see if that low of a dose has helped anyone else.
