A patient is booked for a Laparoscopic Ovarian cystectomy. After the camera lens is inserted, the gynecologist notes that the bowel has been perforated. What are your actions at this point? What supplies you might need to gather, and who you may call. What are the potential implications of a bowel perforation if not discovered at the time of laparoscopy?
The biggest problem is the chance of peritonitis. This can happen even with the perforation being found. My first call would be gi surgeon, he'd have to go in and fix the perforation. The peritoneum is going to have to be flushed out, to try to minimize the risk of peritonitis.
