Is it really the prednisone or will it just increase my appetite so I will want to eat more? How does the weight gain blamed on prednisone really work?
It increases your appetite. I went 6.5 months with the VA telling me nothing was wrong with me, go home boy, here's some drugs I went from a healthy 188 lbs to 170 lbs in that time period. //// Then when I finally started getting prednisone treatment, I went from 170 lbs to 205 in less than 6 months.
Prednisone will both make most people very hungry especially at higher doses and it causes fluid retention as well. Long term use can cause a rounded face and buffalo hump. It can be a silver bullet but it's not without some great risks when used long term.
I was a dancer, perfect weight for my age and height, 145 pounds. Got PMR and started on Prednisone, doctor told me about getting fat so I started a diet with the Prednisone. I was always hungry and in 6 months I gained 56 pounds, diet and everything. You can't do a lot of exercise with this illness, the pain won't let you so you get fat and yes I hate the puffy face but at least, the people who know I am not fat for excess eating and they ask, "are you on cortisone?" I started on 55mg and down to 5mg of Prednisone after 4 years but I can't stop taking it or my seed rate goes up to 80% again and pain starts again so I haven't been able to loose much, just 6 or 7 pounds. Now that the pain is controlled I am starting on a routine of exercise to see if I can go back to my weight again. Puffy face is gone.
