... on 15 mg. prednisone. My doc had me start 60mg. today. I have scalp, temple and cheekbone pain among many other areas. I have a biopsy of the temoral artery on mon. I have to schedule a bone scan also asap. Anyone have good advice about the prednisone or any of this?
Hi Sherri678, I wonder how you are doing? I just logged on today for the first time, having the same problems as you, diagnosed in January. I was on 40mg prednisolone, got down to 20mg and had problems(fatigue, headaches, joing pains), put back up to 30mg for a slower withdrawal, now down to 25mg and working down to 10 in a few weeks. My advice is keep talking to the medical people! Looks to me like the prednisolone is terrible stuff, but better than a stroke or going blind, eh!!!
Follow your doctor's advice, especially if he is a rheumatologist. I have GCA also with the PMR and am on the higher dose of Prednisone, starting with 40 mg a day. GCA is a dangerous condition and must be contained as quickly as possible. I have decreased the Prednisone down to 30 mg per day, as my Rheumy doc advised. I will have a bone scan soon, along with an EEG and regular testing done on the sed rate and CRP rates. Keep up with the latest data on this disease and stay informed. Good luck.
I had my biopsy in Nov, 2011. I had already been prescribed 20mg prednisone because of unknown facial swelling.
From 20 mg I gradually went down to 1 on 12/1/12. My blood tests were all good. On 1/1/13 I went to 0 prednisone and had a blood test on the 5th or 6th. My sed rate was very high and I started back on 20 mg.
My rheumatologist tells me there is no assurance that I will ever be finished with GCA; once you have it you will always have it (except he's working with an experimental drug that might end it the condition but i don't want to try the drug, it's too scary).
So, I will reduce my prednisone intake more slowly than his schedule and I hope I can find a level I can live with that will also keep the GCA at bay.
I am on 6mg now.
