... treatment. She is to start Hydroxyurea one pill a day. I am a little concerned with this med due to her age and side effects. Her CBC is high and platelets, giant platelets and size of blood cells have changed. She also has congestive heart failure. The Hematologist did not recommend phlebotomy due to thrombotic side effects. Any advice for her would be appreciated.
Hi Lauraj155; I have not understood why your Mom has not been treated for PV for over 6 years?? PV needs to be treated before it degenerates into a bigger complication. I have been on Hydroxyurea (500mg)/day for over 6 years now (after many TpH) and it has been maintaining my PCV (Hemetocrit) under 48. FYI, I have tried alternate systems of Medicine (Ayurveda, Yoga, Chinese Accupuncture, etc) to no avail. I am currently testing out Homeopathy. If it works for me (I will know within 30 days), I shall share the details with all on this forum. Meantime, please start your mom on Hydroxyurea 500 (one pill a day after breakfast) and ensure that she is properly hydrated. Also have her CBC done every month to monitor PCV and platelet count. Furthermore, please do not ever stop the medication for her heart ailment.
