over 5 yrs. I want to come of this tab how much do i reduce by and for how long
Hello mad1. Well, tapering would certainly be the safest route, in as you'll be giving your body a gradual removal of it. I was on lexapro 30mg but only I believe it was a year. I, in my case dropped it 10 mg at a time and was through with it in I believe it was 6 wee4ks. I suggest, you drop it 5mg at a time. That way, you'll likely not feel any side effects such as irritabilty which is common to stopping lexapro. You can be the best judge, and decide accordingly. I know you posted a previous question, regarding different medications and I wonder if you are going to replace the lexapro and if so, what might you have chosen. You should be fine, just take it slowly, you've been on it for a long while.
Hey Maddie! i was on lexapro for only two years and i wanted off since it was not helping with my anxiety. Before the doctor took me off of the medication he tried putting me on cymbalta. i was then on cymbalta and when he made the switch i did not experience any problems from switching meds. what i did when i wanted off cymbalta ( i know you asking about lexapro but they are both antidepressents and i read cymbalta is much worse to get off of). what i did was lowered weekly. i was on 30mg. so what i did was cut the dosage to 25mg for a week. then i did 20mg for a week. then 15mg for a week. then 10 mg for a week and then 5mg for a week. then i started to skip days. i would go every other day for a week and then went every 2 days and then stopped. I told my doctor i was doing this and i was experiencing what they call brain zaps. he put me on Topamax to prevent headaches and it will prevent any seizures. it also made me lose 20lbs! it was great and i finally was off of the cymbalta. i was then put on the lowest dose of celexa for two weeks and then was on nothing.
the worst of what i experienced when doing this was brain zaps and headaches. i think i was a little tired as well.
This was my experience and it worked out very well for me. I believe for you that you should purchase a pill cutter and drop your dose to 35mg for a week. then when you feel comfortable go to 30mg, then 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 2.5 and be done. i would tell your doctor and ask him for anti anxiety medication and ask what they think about prescribing you a low dose of topomax ( i gained 25lbs on lexapro so it will help you get back to your normal weight if you ended up gaining from lexapro like i did). the anti anxiety medication will help you if you start getting any anxiety and will help you sleep if that is a problem for you but if i remember correctly it was not a problem for me.
I really hope this helped you in any way. you can do it and you can be off that medication within 2 months (i know that seems like a long time but it is worth it)
DO NOT GO COLD TURKEY!! please do not do that. i know it seems like a faster way to do it but you have been on it for 5 years... whats another 2 months? let me know how things go!
Good luck!!! my thoughts go out to you and dont let anybody tell you that you are doing the wrong thing going off of them. you know what is best for you not anybody else.
