I’m on day 26 of my cycle which is irregular to begin with, but on average it is 32-36... usually, it has gone as long as day 42 possibly. The condom broke, I also use a spermicide. I took one step Plan B within an hour. I cannot take hormonal birth control pills because they make my depression insane. And cannot get a copper iud because my periods are insanely heavy & painful. So, my doc recommended condoms with spermicide. I’ve been doing this for a year and today was the first time this has happened. Can anyone give me any advice? Could I be pregnant? How long do I need to wait to have a real period after taking Plan B? When is the soonest I should do a pregnancy test? Plus I’ve been stressed about my job which I know will most likely mess up my period. Please help.
Plan B may cause you significant emotional upset if you are sensitive to artificial hormones. I am, & cannot use Plan B (Levonorgestrel) because it really gives me a hard time, emotionally. I use the other emergency pill called Ella (Ulipristal Acetate), if I have an emergency.
Due to your irregular periods, you won't know for sure when you ovulate, so Ella would have been the better choice of emergency contraception.
Plan B works by delaying your ovulation until the sperm leaves your body. If you're already ovulating then it can't do that, so may not help.
Some think Plan B works in other ways, & indeed it may, but the Manufacturer does not claim that, as it has not been proven. You can see their careful choice of wording on their website.
Plan B effects everyone differently, & can be a different experience, each time you use it. Women with already irregular periods often find their periods are irregular for months afterwards, with some not bleeding for months, & others having very heavy bleeding. It can also be a mix of the two.
There's no way of knowing if Plan B worked for you. Not until you're far enough along to do a pregnancy test. I've seen women bleed like a proper period, after using Plan B, & still end up pregnant.
I'd suggest testing at least 2 or 3 weeks after the sex. However, not all pregnancies show that early.
Sorry I can't give you better news.
I also don’t take the pill or anything for the same reason (messes with my depression and mood big time), but I have never had a huge problem or issue taking Plan B. I have taken it about 5 times and have had some cramps and moodiness, but it just felt like a bad period (I also have intense periods but it sounds like maybe yours are worse . Ideally when I have taken it, Ive tried to make sure I was relaxing and not too far from my bed in case I needed to lie down or sleep. Chamomile tea helps. Heating pad. Again- like a bad period.
For me, risking some pain and discomfort by taking Plan B was worth it for my peace of mind. I would take it as soon as possible (take the brand name over the generic if you can afford it- i have heard it’s better/fewer side effects) But then you should definitely go to your doctor and ask the questions you gave regarding when you will know if you’re pregnant, etc.
